Ronnie Delany - Guest speaker

The Rotary Club of Navan was greatly honoured with the appearance of Ronnie Delany or “The Villanova Rocket” as he was then nicknamed as their guest speaker on the 15th November 2011.

In December 1956 Ronnie Delany sprinted home to win the gold medal in the 1500m Olympic final in Melbourne, setting a new Olympic record in the process. 3:41:2. In the depressed Ireland of the fifties, Delaney’s win — an outsider storming ahead to beat the favourites — caught the imagination of a nation, and made him a sporting icon. In 1956 he became only the seventh runner to join the exclusive club of four-minute milers. Then came his phenomenal win in Melbourne, and a new Irish hero was born. Ronnie was also a winner of countless Wanamaker Miles at Madison Square Gardens.

During the evening, he was delighted to participate in the presentations to the winners of the Youth Leadership Development Competition, for 2011.
