Winner of Navan Youth Leadership Development Competition 2012

Youth Leadership winner sets sights on Europe

A special trip to Europe lies ahead next March for Navan student Alba Mullen.

Alba is a third year student at St. Michael’s Loreto Secondary School in Navan, who collected the top honour in the Rotary Club of Navan Youth Leadership Development Competition recently, and qualified as one of the regional finalists. Alba was presented with the Tony Rowntree Memorial Shield and a cheque from the Navan Credit Union.

She went forward to represent Navan Rotary Club in the regional finals, hosted by the Newry Rotary Club.

Altogether nine clubs participated in this event, including Armagh, Banbridge, Dundalk, Dungannon, Portadown, Newry, Lurgan, and Navan, and Alba was one of the three winners to emerge from the final. The others winners were from Dungannon and Drogheda.

The much coveted prize is an all-expense paid weeklong trip that will include Belfast, Parliament Buildings, Stormont, the Home to the Northern Ireland Assembly, Dublin, Dail Eireann, Houses of the Oireachtas, the European Parliament offices in Dublin and attendance at the Euroscole student day in Strasbourg. Alba will be joining a group of 24 winners from all over the island of Ireland. This group forms an Irish Youth Leadership Delegation who is accompanied to Brussels for a week in March each year. They are joined by a similar number from the other EU countries and participate in workshops in mixed groups and have the use of the EU Parliament to debate the various issues they have considered.

Navan Credit Union has been our very generous sponsor for our “Club Competition” in recent years and through this sponsorship has ensured that this great opportunity can continue for our local students.

Alba is also secretary of Meath Comhoirle na nOg, and a member of “Jigsaw” Meath Youth Advisory Panel.
