Youth Leadership & Development Competition 2013-14

The Rotary Club of Navan along with Rotary International District 1160 (Ireland, North and South) with the assistance of the European Parliament Office in Dublin, are again sponsoring a programme within schools and youth organisations to help develop the communication skills of young people.

Mr. Ian McGowan-Smyth from the Navan Rotary Club says, ‘we have been involved with this competition since it’s inception in 1990’. We are changing it this year to involve more young people in the area. We think we will help a number of people get some of the better jobs that are now available in our community. This in turn will help the whole community, which is one of the primary objectives of the Rotary Movement.

Those wishing to take part will be asked to complete a “job style” application form. These forms will be available through schools and youth organisations or can be downloaded directly from www.rotary.ie and click on “Youth Leadership Competition”. The forms will be examined by Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Navan who will make helpful comments on where the participant can improve their completion of application forms. All young people between the age of over 15 and under 18 on the 31st March 2014 are eligible through their school or youth organisation.

From each participating school, applicants will be selected for interview on their leadership qualities. Navan Rotary will then select the individual school winners and an overall winner who will win a prize for themselves and their schools.

The overall winner will advance to represent the Navan Rotary Club at the Regional finals. Twenty-four students from across the island of Ireland are selected at the regional finals to participate in a weeklong leadership development programme. The week consists of three days in Belfast and Dublin before setting off for the European Parliament in Strasbourg to play a part in the Euroscola Programme early next year. The winners debate major EU issues in the European Parliament Building with 600 other students from most countries across the European Union.

This competition offers a personal development experience not to be missed. The winners, representing Rotary International in Ireland at Euroscola Day in Strasbourg, will be making new friends, experiencing challenges and having plenty of fun throughout the week.

The closing date for the local competition is 15th October 2013. The interviews will take place in the Navan Credit Union Buildings on the 22nd October.
